An Alicante-based developer is resuming development of the Sierra Golf complex in Murcia.
The City Council has given the green light to a first phase of construction of housing for tourist and residential use of the total of almost 3,000
"It will be a multi-million-pound investment that will reactivate the Campo de Murcia region." The Councilor for Urban Planning, Antonio Navarro, announced this Friday, following the meeting of the Municipal Governing Board, the reactivation of the Sierra Golf tourist-residential complex, on the so-called Escobar estate in the Murcia district of Jerónimo y Avileses. The Alicante-based company Moorstyle España will proceed to complete the development of the 92 pending plots in phases, which includes up to 3,000 homes, as well as a hotel and other facilities, as outlined in the partial plan.
In the first phase, the company already has a permit to build 311 homes and complete the urban services, such as the telephone and electricity networks, and the connection to the water and sanitation networks, among others, and intends to do so "as soon as possible," the councilor stated. The second phase will have 324 homes.

Navarro noted that the project has already been approved and that only the completion of other projects remains at the complex, which already includes a wastewater treatment plant and a sewage system to serve the homes built before the housing crisis, when development was halted. The majority of residents are British citizens.
The project covers 1.3 million square meters and includes 500 hectares of environmental improvements. The company will launch with an investment of almost €4.7 million of the total planned investment of around €50 million.
The complex is located next to other developments in the area, such as Hacienda Riquelme, La Peraleja, and Altaona, which were known before the crisis, known as Mosa Trajectum. "This is an important project for Campo de Murcia, which is once again attracting investors due to its proximity to the airport and the highway network, such as the Mar Menor, La Manga and Cartagena highways, and the Santomera-San Javier highway," said Navarro, who added that the Altaona development company has also requested construction permits.
"The mild winter temperatures and good connections to other cities and the sea are an incentive for European citizens," he emphasized.
The claim of golf
But without a doubt, a major draw for the revival of this urban complex is the golf course, called New Sierra Golf, which also belongs to the Alicante-based company and has continued operating despite the 2008 economic crisis that put the development on hold.
"It's considered one of the best in southeastern Spain and is another incentive for those looking for a second or even first home," says Antonio Navarro.
Last September, the company officially opened holes 10 through 18 to the public, making it a professional course, a course that can be completed in a single round. For the owner, it all began in 2016, when the construction company acquired the Sierra Golf complex: a closed 9-hole course with 514 homes, many of them auctioned off. Almost a decade later, the complex is facing a new future.
Aid to rehabilitate 375 homes
From this Saturday until August 19, residents, homeowners' associations, housing cooperatives, and businesses in the municipality of Murcia can apply for financial aid to carry out renovation work on residential buildings and single-family homes. The total amount of funding is €4.3 million, provided by the Spanish Government's Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan, financed by the European Union through the Next Generation Funds.
This Friday, the decree regulating this call for grants for the "Programmed Rehabilitation Residential Environment (ERRP) Murcia-1 Barrios" (Murcia Crece) program was published in the Official Gazette of the Region (BORM). This grant will benefit approximately 375 homes in 28 neighborhoods of the city, as part of the "Murcia Crece" strategic project.
"With this European Union grant, Murcia's housing stock will undergo a true transformation, with efficiency improvements that will allow for an estimated 30% reduction in energy consumption," explained Councilor Antonio Navarro.
"Furthermore, the grants include urban regeneration projects in the neighborhoods and districts where the beneficiary homes are located, presenting a real opportunity for the development of city areas that currently require comprehensive intervention," said the councilor.
The projects eligible for assistance will be selected by the Murcia City Council's Housing Renovation Office in strict order of submission, until funds are exhausted. Applications must be submitted online at the Murcia City Council website (sede.murcia.es). The maximum grant awarded per applicant will be subject to the actual energy savings achieved after completion of the project, provided the improvement is at least 30%.
Depending on the percentage of energy efficiency improvements achieved, the aid amount per home will reach a maximum of €8,100 or 40% of the cost of the project; up to €14,500 or 65% of the cost of the project; and up to €21,400 or 80% of the cost of the project if the energy efficiency improvement is equal to or greater than 60%.
However, in those households where a situation of economic vulnerability is identified, additional assistance may be granted, amounting to up to 100% of the cost of the intervention.
This EU-funded program also includes a second phase, called the ERRP Murcia 2-Districts. This second phase will focus on the districts of Beniaján, Churra, Javalí Nuevo, and Monteagudo. The estimated number of homes to be renovated is 75, in four buildings, with a total project cost of €1,493,895, broken down into €1,274,307 for building renovation and €219,588.25 for urban regeneration.
156,000 euros for humanitarian aid and cooperation
The Governing Board approved a €156,000 grant this Friday to activate three humanitarian aid and cooperation projects for developing countries. Through a competitive bidding process, the largest amount, €100,000, will be allocated, as a priority, to actions that promote sustainable human development through the fight against poverty and inequality, and those that promote social justice, the fight against hunger, healthcare, decent work, children's rights, and social cohesion, explained the responsible councilor, Sofía López-Briones.
Secondly, 32,000 euros will be allocated for interventions in the area of prevention and anticipation of any natural disaster, in order to increase response capacity "and avoid, as far as possible, the suffering of the civilian population in the event of any conflict," as well as to provide healthcare to victims of natural disasters or armed conflicts. This also includes interventions in chronic crises. Finally, 24,000 euros will be allocated to education and awareness-raising programs for development in the municipality of Murcia, and for the temporary hosting of populations from countries in vulnerable areas.
