Monteagudo Castle Christ of Monteagudo
Monteagudo Castle: an icon dating back to the Islamic era
Nestled on an impressive rocky outcrop 149 metres above sea level. The castle is crowned by a colossal sculpture 14 metres high: the Christ of Monteagudo
Anyone who visits Murcia can see the famous Cristo de Monteagudo in the distance, on a hill. It is located on an impressive rocky outcrop that rises up to 149 metres above sea level, dominating the entire Huerta de Murcia.
At its feet runs the "old Monteagudo road" which links two important communication routes for travellers: the roads to Alicante and Castile. This is why settlement in this place has been prolonged and uninterrupted throughout history through the Argaric culture, Iberians, Romans and Arabs.
The architectural remains date back to the Islamic period.
Before the founding of Murcia, it must have been a rural castle where the surrounding peasants took refuge. When the city became the real capital of the territory, it was transformed into an urban castle, a true fort and natural defensive watchtower for the Murcian emirs who resided in the city.
After the Christian conquest, it came under the control of the Castilian monarchy. There is evidence that it was visited at least twice by Alfonso X the Wise himself and that various royal governors resided there.
Discover its secrets at the Monteagudo Interpretation Centre
The Monteagudo Visitor Centre (San Cayetano) is located at the foot of Monteagudo Castle and offers a tour of the 5,000 years of history of the inhabitants of Monteagudo. Through several rooms, it allows visitors to learn about the Argaric, Iberian, Roman and Arab civilizations that settled in Monteagudo.
The visitor centre recommends taking an easy route, about 6 kilometres long, which takes in the most emblematic areas of the region. The walk lasts about 2 hours and follows well-marked paths.
