Cathedral of Murcia

The Cathedral of Murcia

Heart, pride and icon of a city and artistically it is the most important construction and its tower is the symbol of Murcia.

Main facade: world summit of baroque

The main façade or imafronte of the cathedral, designed by Jaime Bort, is a jewel of international baroque of exceptional beauty and unique in its kind. It was built thanks to the help of Cardinal Belluga - Cardinal in Rome and great benefactor of the city - to whom the square on which it stands was dedicated and which constitutes one of the meeting points and celebration of the most important events in Murcian life. The two main themes of the façade are the Exaltation of the Virgin Mary - to whom the temple is consecrated - and the Glorification of the Church.Next

The second tallest tower in Spain, after the Giralda in Seville

This majestic bell tower is 90 metres high - 95 with the weather vane - making it the second tallest in Spain, after the Giralda in Seville. It is also the highest point in the entire city and is made up of five sections of decreasing width.

The interior of the Cathedral is mostly Gothic. Its layout is three naves with an ambulatory and chapels. Through its chapels one can follow the ecclesiastical history of the Diocese, since most of these are the burial places of bishops and nobles who encouraged or collaborated in its construction.

Among its extraordinary chapels, the Vélez chapel and the Junterones chapel stand out.

The Vélez Chapel is in the flamboyant Gothic style, with an impressive ten-pointed star-shaped dome, unique in its style. The Junterones Chapel is listed, due to its complexity and majesty, as one of the great works of the Spanish Renaissance. Also noteworthy are the Plateresque choir stalls, the retrochoir or the portal of the ante-sacristy and the great Merklin organ, which with its almost 4,000 pipes and four keyboards is one of the most important on an international level.

Both the Cathedral Museum and its chapels are of singular beauty. The museum is located in the former cloister of the Cathedral. There you can see paintings from the Italian Trecento, paintings by Luca Giordano and impressive sculptures by the master Francisco Salzillo.
